In 1870, a ladies committee, along with doctors John Singleton and William Smith, established the Melbourne Free Hospital for Sick Children. Opening its doors on 9 September 1870 with only six rooms, the hospital aimed to give the best care to sick and injured children, free of charge. In a century and a half, paediatric healthcare at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne has advanced to the point that it is recognised as one of the world’s great hospitals for children. Today, the vision of the RCH continues, as children and families from communities across Australia and around the world benefit from its legacy with great health outcomes, and still at no charge. In 2011 a new 340-bed hospital, designed by Billard Leece Partnership and Bates Smart Architects, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on a site in Parkville adjacent to the existing hospital. By November that year patients had been moved into the new facility and demolition of the old site was complete by December 2012. Much of the old site was turned into parkland, creating a new gateway to Royal Park.
