Flourishing and diverse plant species are crucial to our existence, being the source of fresh air, food, medicines, shelter, environmental health and more. But factors such as climate change, over-exploitation, salinity and landscape fragmentation all impact greatly on the survival of both wild and cultivated plant species. Seed banking has been established in several countries as an insurance against species extinction, and as a source of quality seed for use in restoring depleted plant communities and habitats. Australia is home to several seed banks, most of which are associated with botanical gardens. These organisations collect, conserve and research flora species to ensure the continuing diversity and resilience of our botanical world. They also contribute to the world’s largest seed bank, the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK, which effectively functions as an offsite back-up for our national seed collections. The stamps in this issue feature the seeds of three native species, each of which is at risk.
