09-July-2019 Norfolk Island Australia Phillip Island Wesley First Day Cover with colour photograph Phillip Island cachet and $1 stamp showing Erosion and $2 stamp View From Offshore tied pictorial postmark Phillip Island, Norfolk Island, NSW. Norfolk Island incorporates the main island and two small uninhabited islands: Nepean Island and Phillip Island, which was named in 1788 for Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales. Phillip Island lies six kilometres south of Norfolk Island, is volcanic in origin and has an area of 190 hectares. From the 1790s, introduced animals caused significant erosion to the fragile vegetation and soil structure of Phillip Island. Rabbits were successfully eradicated in 1988 and the island is now free of feral animals. Regeneration programs are now rehabilitating and protecting Phillip Island, which is an important breeding site for seabirds and home to rare flora and fauna, including endemic plants, two reptile species and the Phillip Island centipede.
